Can You Get Private Health Insurance in Northern Ireland?

Yes. Private health insurance is available in Northern Ireland and can be used alongside Health and Social Care Northern Ireland (HSC). It is designed to pay for eligible private diagnosis and treatment under the terms of your policy; it does not replace HSC, emergency care or every service you may need.

The main practical difference when comparing cover in Northern Ireland is local private hospital and specialist access. The independent sector is smaller than in many parts of Great Britain, so a cheap policy is poor value if the hospitals or specialists you would realistically use are outside its recognised network.

Why Northern Ireland Is Different

Waiting times are a major reason people consider private cover. The latest quarterly figures published by the Northern Ireland Department of Health on 3 September 2026, covering the position on 30 June 2026, show:

504,537
patients waiting for a first consultant-led outpatient appointment
59.1 weeks
median waiting time for a first outpatient appointment
231,145
patients waiting for a diagnostic test

The same release says 53.7% of people waiting for a first outpatient appointment had waited more than 52 weeks, while 35.0% of those waiting for a diagnostic test had waited more than 26 weeks. It also records 81,223 people waiting for inpatient or day-case admission, with a median wait of 24.9 weeks.

The Department notes that figures sourced from the encompass electronic patient record are “official statistics in development” and are not directly comparable with legacy pre-encompass data.

Already on an HSC Waiting List? Read This Before Buying

A new individual health insurance policy will not usually pay for the condition that has already put you on a waiting list. If you had symptoms, medical advice, tests, treatment or a referral before the policy started, the insurer will normally treat that condition as pre-existing under the policy's underwriting rules.

You can still buy cover for eligible new conditions that arise later. If you already have insured cover and are switching, or you are joining an employer scheme, the underwriting position may be different. Confirm the written terms before cancelling existing cover.

Private Hospitals in Northern Ireland

Private hospital access is concentrated around Belfast. Two examples listed by the Private Healthcare Information Network (PHIN) are:

Belfast

Kingsbridge Private Hospital

PHIN lists Kingsbridge Private Hospital at 811–815 Lisburn Road, Belfast. Its profile includes inpatient/day-case surgery, outpatient services and diagnostic facilities including MRI and CT.

Belfast

Ulster Independent Clinic

PHIN lists the Ulster Independent Clinic at 245 Stranmillis Road, Belfast, with inpatient, day-case, outpatient and diagnostic services.

These are examples, not a complete hospital list and not a statement that every insurer covers them. Your insurer must recognise the facility, consultant and proposed treatment under your own policy.

PHIN reported 23,000 private hospital admissions across Northern Ireland's 10 private hospitals in 2025. In Q1 2026 it recorded 5,720 admissions, with insured admissions down year on year and self-pay admissions up.

How Much Is Private Health Insurance in Northern Ireland?

There is no reliable single “average Northern Ireland premium” that applies to everyone. Price depends on the insurer, age, postcode, smoking status, hospital choice, outpatient benefits, excess and other policy options.

For a transparent illustration, Bupa publishes the following May 2026 non-smoker examples for a single person in selected Northern Ireland cities. The configuration is Comprehensive cover with a £500 outpatient allowance, £500 excess, extended hospital choice and full cancer cover.

Age bandBupa example monthly premiumWhat this figure is

What Should You Compare?

1

Hospital list

Start with the facilities you could realistically travel to. Check the exact insurer network rather than assuming “UK cover” means every private hospital.

2

Outpatient cover

Consultations, scans and diagnostic tests are often the part of cover people want first. Some policies cap or restrict outpatient benefits.

3

Referral model

Some plans give broader consultant choice; others use guided/open-referral arrangements. The model can affect both premium and choice.

4

Underwriting

Moratorium, full medical underwriting and switching terms can result in different exclusions. Do not judge a switch by premium alone.

Does Northern Ireland Cover Include Treatment in Great Britain?

Some policies can cover eligible treatment at recognised facilities elsewhere in the UK, but you should not assume the insurer will pay your travel or hotel costs. Bupa's Northern Ireland guide, for example, says a health insurance policy is unlikely to cover travel costs and accommodation for receiving treatment, aside from recognised facility charges connected with eligible inpatient care.

What Does Private Health Insurance Usually Cover?

Individual PMI is generally designed for eligible new acute conditions. Depending on the plan, benefits can include private specialist consultations, diagnostic tests, inpatient and day-patient treatment, surgery and cancer treatment. Outpatient limits, therapies, mental health benefits, hospital access and cancer terms vary significantly.

Private health insurance is not a substitute for HSC emergency services, and it does not automatically cover chronic conditions, routine primary care, every drug or every pre-existing condition.

Common Questions

Northern Ireland Health Insurance FAQs

Yes. Private medical insurance is available in Northern Ireland and is used alongside Health and Social Care Northern Ireland (HSC). The exact hospitals, specialists and benefits you can use depend on the insurer and policy you choose.
There is no single market-wide price. Premiums vary by age, postcode, smoking status, insurer, hospital access, outpatient cover, excess and other choices. Bupa's May 2026 examples for one specific Comprehensive configuration ranged from £19.38 a month for a non-smoker under 30 to £141.45 for a non-smoker over 70; those are Bupa examples, not market averages.
Usually not on a new individual policy. If symptoms, advice, investigation, treatment or a referral existed before cover started, the condition will normally be treated as pre-existing under the policy's underwriting rules. Switching from existing insured cover and some workplace schemes can work differently.
It depends on your insurer's hospital list and whether the hospital and consultant are recognised for the treatment. Examples include Kingsbridge Private Hospital and Ulster Independent Clinic. Always check your policy before booking.
Do not assume it will. A policy may cover eligible treatment at recognised facilities but not travel or hotel costs. Check the exact terms of the policy you are considering.
